What About Us? BLM & The Scourge of Colonialism

The scourge of colonialism has never gone away. Many of us Brits know too little about this dark chapter in our history, yet it lingers in every corner of the previously colonised world today. Colonialism was a collection of acts so heinous that it condemned millions around the world to lives of servitude and assimilation. The colonisers pillaged their way through so called ‘uncivilised’ nations, denouncing their cultures and beliefs as ‘savage,’ before systemically imposing Western ideology, religion and culture on the unsuspecting populations. Nowhere was colonialism so pronounced than on the continent of Africa. Black Lives Matter

Today, we've participated in #blackouttuesday on Instagram.  But I want to address something that I saw written earlier on Facebook - 'Don't all lives matter?' Of course they do. And misunderstanding this point is at the crux of the Black Lives Matter Movement. Saying that black lives matter is not saying that white lives don't. However, not acknowledging the daily struggle that BAME communities face is essentially believing that racism isn't a problem. As Archbishop Desmond Tutu famously said: If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.
